Focusing on Your Eye Health

At Dr. Korthals & Associates, we believe that clear vision begins with healthy eyes. That’s why we focus on checking your overall eye health, not just your prescription.

Our eye exams include detailed imaging to help detect even the smallest changes. We aim to catch any signs of eye disease before they can cause vision issues. Additionally, we offer low-level light therapy (LLLT) in the clinic, amongst other dry eye treatments

With 2 locations across North Central Iowa, in Mason City and Lake Mills, our team is ready to assist you.

Comprehensive Eye Exams in North Central Iowa

As part of our comprehensive eye exams, we use innovative diagnostic technology, including retinal imaging and OCT scans, which help us view the health of your eyes and retinas. We may also use specular microscopy to check the health of your cornea.

Combining these technologies with regularly scheduled eye exams helps us support your vision and comfort. We work with you to address any concerns you have and answer all your questions.

Dr. Korthals thoroughly explains each part of the eye exam, especially for kids. His patience and knowledge help make the experience relaxed.

Your Vision, Our Care: Technology for Healthy Eyes

We place great importance on providing our patients with thorough eye exams to check for any conditions. That’s why we utilize modern diagnostic technology to help detect any signs that are not always visible to the naked eye.

Some technologies you may encounter during your eye exam include:

  • Oculus 5M: This noninvasive device helps detect and diagnose dry eye conditions.
  • MD Elite LLLT: A treatment using low-level light therapy to restore tear production for dry eye.
  • Photobiomodulation: Another application of LLLT to help improve vision affected by dry age-related macular degeneration.
  • Optos: A retinal camera that takes fundus photos—pictures of the inside of the eye.
  • OCT: Optical coherence tomography scans take cross sections of the retina, like a CAT scan for the eye. This helps to detect changes which can indicate eye diseases.
  • Visual Field: A visual field analyzer tests your peripheral (side) vision. Changes to your peripheral vision can be an indicator of eye disease.
  • ERG: Electroretinography is used to test the function of the eye’s retinal cells. While optos and OCT scans look at the anatomy of the retina, ERG checks that the retina is working properly.
  • Specular Microscopy: Closely examines the cornea (the clear front of the eye) for any damage caused by contacts or eye conditions like Fuchs dystrophy, which affect the cornea.
  • Anterior Segment Cameras: Take pictures of the front of the eye, helping to detect changes and diagnose conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
