Maintaining Your Eye Health with Eye Exams

Regular eye exams are a key component of maintaining your overall health and wellness. At Dr. Korthals & Associates, we prioritize thorough exams for all our patients to screen for signs of eye disease or other health conditions. This helps us catch eye problems early.

During each eye exam, we incorporate various pre-tests using our diagnostic technology to assess your peripheral (side) vision, the health of your retina and cornea, and other aspects of your eye health. Our kind and knowledgeable staff are happy to answer any questions you have during your eye exam.

We’ll also work with you to address any concerns you have about your vision or family history and to manage eye symptoms related to other conditions, such as allergies or diabetes. Contact us to schedule your next eye exam today.

A Closer Look Through Technology

Our diagnostic technology helps us to provide a deep analysis of your eye health. Most commonly, we use our retinal camera (we’re happy to show you the photos, too!).

We also use OCT (optical coherence tomography) scans, which are similar to CAT scans for the eyes, to detect signs of retinal conditions or diseases that are typically not visible to the naked eye.

Some of our technology is not used in every exam, but its use depends on factors such as your age, medical history, or specific needs and concerns. For example, we use the Oculus to check for dry eye, and the specular microscopy for cornea health, often in our contact lens fittings.

What to Expect During Your Eye Exam

When you schedule an eye exam with us, we’ll guide you through our pre-tests, which include taking pictures of your retina, checking your eye pressure (IOP), and getting an overall understanding of your eye health.

After the pre-testing, you’ll meet with your optometrist and walk through the results of your initial exam. We’ll check your visual acuity and update your prescription if needed.

During routine screening, we check for more than eye diseases. Your eyes also show signs of up to 270 systemic health conditions, making regular eye exams vital for early detection and treatment.

The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends that adults undergo an eye exam at least every 2 years until the age of 64. From the age of 65 onward, the AOA recommends annual eye exams. For children, the AOA recommends annual exams starting from the time they begin school. Patients with risk factors (e.g., diabetes, family history of glaucoma) may need more frequent exams.

Dry Eye Screenings

During each of our adult eye exams, we screen for dry eye. This condition can cause significant discomfort, with symptoms including redness, stinging or burning sensations, blurry vision, and others.

Using the Oculus 5M, we can quickly and accurately determine if you are experiencing dry eye. Once we have diagnosed your condition and understand its cause (usually insufficient tears or poor-quality tears), we can create a personalized treatment plan to help you find relief.

Avulux Migraine Glasses

Avulux migraine glasses help to reduce light-triggered migraine attacks by filtering blue, amber, and red light. Avulux is the only clinically proven lens to help people living with migraine and light sensitivity, with 9 out of 10 Avulux wearers reporting that they can resume their daily activities while wearing the glasses.

If you’re light sensitive and prone to migraines, let us know during your eye exam. We can provide guidance on whether Avulux is a good option for you.
